Lab 6: Storyboarding and the Creation of an Animated Linear Narrative

Task 1: Explore the Completed Storyboard

The first step in creating an animated story is to construct a storyboard. The storyboard process begins by sketching out your scripted story in a collection of graphic panels. Once the storyboard panels have been sketched, animation requirements are drawn directly on the graphic panels (see red markings) , specifying actions such as zooming in and panning. Finally, build notes are supplied to provide additional guidance. The completed Storyboard is a collection of panels and notes representing small segments that make up the full story. The panels for this lab have already been created, as shown on the right. Examine the 13 storyboard panels. Pay careful attention to the "camera" action words. pause pan truck-in (means zoom-in) fade-out to white start pan end pan





Task 2: Preliminary tasks before building the animation.

Download all graphic panels shown on the right. These are the completed artwork elements that will be used for this animation. Launch WickEditor.com and set the new canvas stage to a width of 212 and a height of 150. Upload the graphic panels into the Asset Library. Create three layers in your timeline: (a)TV Frame (b)Panels (c)Backgrounds Within the TV Frame layer, create a frame outline (in bright red) around the canvas. This will provide you with a guide for the boundaries of the canvas. Position the TV Frame Layer at the top of the layer list, extend it so that it occupies frames 1- 330. Finally, place a lock on the TV Frame.

Task 3: Building the Animation using the Storyboard Panels as a Guide.

In this task you will implement the camera movements, specified in the storyboard panels and notes.
Follow the actions/motions described in each panel and the Build Notes.
You may need to make a few assumptions on your own.




Storyboard Panel 1

Build Notes Panel 1 introduces the audience to the main character of the story. Camera actions requirements: PAUSE #1: frames 1 - 20 of the Panel layer. PAN: frames 21 - 40 of the Panel layer. PAUSE #2: frames 41 - 60 of the Panel layer. TRUCK-IN (zoom into the boy's face): frames 61 - 70 of the Panel layer PAUSE #3: frames 71 - 80 of the Panel layer.

The red rectangles show the location of the TV frame.

Storyboard Panel 2

Build Notes Panel 2 is a dialog image where the boy yells Wolf for the first time. The audience does not see the wolf. Panic appears on the boy's face. No motion is required for this panel. PAUSE: frames 81 - 100 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 3

Build Notes Panel 3 is a dialog panel where villagers appear hysterical and panic-stricken. Once again the audience does not see the wolf. PAUSE: frames 101 - 120 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 4

Build Notes Panel 4 is a dialog image where the boy smiles and sweetly says he is kidding. NO motion is required for this panel. PAUSE: frames 121 - 140 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 5

Build Notes Panel 5 is a dialog image where the villagers show their shock. The camera techniques in this panel are used to represent time passing. PAUSE #1: frames 141 - 150 of the Panel layer. FADE-OUT: frames 151 - 160 of the Panel layer. Note that fading to white may not always work. Make an attempt, but if it fails to fade, please ignore this technique. PAUSE #2: frames 161 - 170 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 6

Build Notes dialog and image panel where again the boy yells Wolf for the second time. PAUSE: frames 171 - 190 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 7

Build Notes The villagers are in a state of suspicious agitation. PAUSE: frames 191 - 210 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 8

Build Notes The boy says again that he is kidding. PAUSE #1: frames 211 - 220 of the Panel layer. FADE-OUT: frames 221 - 230 of the Panel layer. PAUSE #2: frames 231 - 240 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 9

Build Notes The boy yellS Wolf for the third time. PAUSE: frames 241 - 260 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panel 10

Build Notes The villagers are fuming mad and not in the least persuaded that a wolf exists. PAUSE: frames 261 - 280 of the Panel layer.

Storyboard Panels 11 and 12

Build Notes Take a moment to study and understand the guides in this storyboard panel. Storyboard panels 11 and 12 show the boy running with the wolf chasing him. To produce speed, these two panels are used in tandem. Panels 11 and 12 will occupy frames 281 - 310, each on a different layer. (a) boy and wolf : Panel 11 should be placed on the Panel layer. (b) background : Panel 12 should be placed on the Background layer. Panels 11 and 12 also require PANNING motions. (a)Panel 12 pans from left to right. (b)Panel 11 (boy/wolf image) pans in the opposite direction.

Storyboard Panel 13

Build Notes The final scene of the animation. Panel 13 will occupy frames 311 - 330 of the Panel layer. Experiment with your own camera actions, such as using a fade-in.

Adding Audio Sounds to Enhance the Movie

Identify where sounds work the best. Add notes for sounds to your storyboard. Search for sounds, or make them. Add them as assets. Using separate layers in the timeline, apply sounds.
